I celebrated my first Holi in 2021—at 22. Quite unusual for a North Indian, but I always avoided crowds and the chaos. That changed when I experienced Holi in Mathura.
Amidst the birthplace of Lord Krishna, I found myself drenched in color, music, and joy. Mathura’s Rangotsav isn’t just a festival—it’s a transformation.
THE TRANS POWER
In Mathura’s Holi celebrations, transgenders take center stage—dressed as Radha or Krishna, dancing with unmatched energy, infusing the festival with life. Their presence is electric, their spirit divine.
Yet, beneath this joy lies a painful irony. The same society that mocks or marginalizes them all year suddenly rushes to touch, grope, or objectify them in the name of festivity. The applause they receive is stained with hypocrisy.
Despite facing daily rejection, they show up—bold, beautiful, and brave. Their dance is more than performance; it’s a rebellion, a prayer, a cry for dignity. Behind their vibrant smiles are stories of pain, strength, and relentless hope.
Holi in Mathura, then, is more than color. It is a bittersweet mirror reflecting both the beauty of expression and the urgent need for empathy and respect for the transgender community.
HOORANGA - A CHAOS TO REMEMBER
Hooranga is a sacred festival held exclusively at Dao Ji Temple in Mathura, Braj. This unique celebration is cherished by the local villagers, who are the sole participants in the event. As a spectator, one can observe the festivities from the walls surrounding the temple.
During Hooranga, a distinct ritual takes place where the females from the village participate in an interesting tradition. They playfully tear down the clothes of all the male participants, which is seen as an act of fun and camaraderie. In response, the males playfully throw water at the females, engaging in a lively exchange of joyful splashes.
Hooranga at Dao Ji Temple is a unique and sacred celebration that immerses participants in a blend of playfulness, tradition, and spiritual devotion. The event showcases the local villagers' deep connection to their cultural heritage and serves as a special occasion for them to come together, express their joy, and strengthen their sense of community.
